What Issues Does Tooth Loss Cause?
Losing teeth has several major effects on your life. These effects include
• |
Your smile deteriorates, which has a significant effect on your confidence.
|
• |
It becomes more difficult to bite and chew properly. When you cannot chew properly, your digestion and your nutrition suffer.
|
• |
Your speech suffers.
|
• |
Biting forces are unevenly distributed, which increases your risk of tooth damage and loss.
|
• |
Without stimulation from your missing teeth, your jawbone loses mass. Over time, the bone weakens and changes shape. Your healthy teeth begin to shift out of alignment, leading to issues such as bruxism and TMD. |
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a modern solution to tooth loss. They are a versatile treatment that can be used to replace a single tooth or many teeth, taking the place of traditional bridges and dentures. Implants use small titanium posts, which are surgically placed into your jawbone, to provide support for your dental restorations. The restorations, or ceramic/porcelain crowns, are used to replace the visible surfaces of your missing teeth. The exact number of implants needed to support your restorations depends on several factors, including the number of missing teeth and the condition of your jawbone.
Replacing Multiple Teeth With Dental Implants
Dental implants require a surgical procedure, which is done under a local anesthetic. Sedation may be provided as well, enabling you to remain comfortable and relaxed during your procedure. Guided Surgery begins with a small hole in your gum tissue, exposing the bone underneath. Next, we drill holes into your jawbone and place the implant directly inside. Finally, the temporary teeth are placed on top.
The amount of time it takes to heal from surgery varies from 3-6 months. During this time, the bone gradually fuses to the implants, integrating them into your jaw. This effectively turns them into strong, stable roots that will be used to hold your new restorations securely in place. We monitor your progress closely to ensure that you are healing properly. Once you have fully healed, impressions of your mouth are taken, which are then used to create a custom abutments (post) and temporary teeth. This allows the tissue to mature further and results in more predictable esthetics when we make the final crowns a few months later. When we are finished with the final crown, we check them for fit and bite before securing them into place with small screws or on occasion cemented.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants provide numerous benefits.
• |
They look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.
|
• |
You can bite and normally chew again, enjoying all of your favorite foods once again. With the ability to chew restored, your digestion and nutrition improve.
|
• |
Your speech is restored to normal.
|
• |
Implants are much more comfortable. Your teeth are supported by the implants rather than your adjacent teeth or your gums.
|
• |
They are much easier to care for. In fact, they can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
|
• |
The posts restore stimulation to your jawbone. This stimulation stops and prevents bone loss in your jaw, helping it to remain strong and healthy. |
