Dental Exams & Cleanings
Even with a good daily oral health care routine, you may still experience problems with your teeth and gums. Many dental problems develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms. In the last 70 years or so, professional dentistry has shifted from treating these problems to preventing them.
The frequency you visit our office depends on the condition of your oral health. Some patients are simply more susceptible to tooth decay and other dental diseases. However, most oral health care professionals agree that biannual checkups and professional cleanings are ideal. At Bijan Family Dental Practice, we can help you maintain pristine oral health with our dental exams and cleanings.
Tooth Decay and Periodontal Disease
Tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease are the most common dental problems, with the same culprits, bacteria. The bacteria is found in plaque, a thin biofilm that is constantly forming on and around your teeth and gums. As the bacteria feed on the sugars and starches you eat, they produce acids that eat away at the enamel. Eventually, enough enamel is lost to create a cavity.
Periodontal disease is an infection caused by your immune system. In response to the bacteria, your immune system produces toxins that affect the gums, connective ligaments, and underlying bone. If periodontal disease is left to progress, the infection can cause irreparable damage to these tissues. Eventually, your teeth will lose the support they need to remain firmly in the mouth. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.
Preventing tooth decay and periodontal disease is key to your oral health. Beyond daily at-home care, dental exams and professional cleanings are the best things you can do to keep your oral tissues healthy and free of disease. Learn more about periodontal disease.
During your routine appointment, Dr. Bijan Modjtahedi will perform a comprehensive exam. This includes a thorough exam of your teeth, gums, and mouth to look for decay and other dental problems. The goal of a dental exam is to prevent, diagnose, and treat issues before they become major complications.
Your exam may also include the use of digital x-rays. An x-ray will give us an in-depth look at your teeth and underlying bone. With x-rays, we can identify minor instances of decay and periodontal disease so that they can be treated as soon as possible.
Before or after your exam, our dental hygienist will perform a professional cleaning. During your cleaning, we will remove plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) deposits from the surfaces of your teeth and roots.
Once your teeth have been properly scaled, we will finish the procedure with a polish. The polish will remove minor stains and restore the sheen of your smile. If we notice any minor signs of decay and disease, we may review proper brushing and flossing techniques with you before you leave the office. You will be provided with a high quality tooth brush, floss, and other tools for your oral health.
